📖 What is it?

A campfire is a small, carefully controlled fire used for warmth, cooking food, boiling water and providing light while camping.

For thousands of years, people have relied on campfires to survive outdoors. Today, they are still used by campers, explorers and outdoor adventurers all over the world.

🌍 Where Would You Use It?

You might build a campfire when:

🏕️ Camping

🥾 Hiking on longer trips

🌲 Survival training

⛺ Scout camps

🏞️ Outdoor adventure holidays

🤔 Why is it Important?

A campfire can help keep you warm, cook food, boil unsafe water and provide light after dark.

However, fire is also dangerous if it isn't treated with care.

Learning how to build and safely manage a campfire is an important outdoor skill.

If the internet disappeared tomorrow, knowing how to safely build and control a campfire could help keep you warm and safe.

⚙️ How Does It Work?

A fire needs three things to burn.

🔥 Heat

🌬️ Oxygen

🪵 Fuel

This is called the Fire Triangle.

If one of these three things is removed, the fire will go out.

🧰 What Equipment Do You Need?

✔️ Dry tinder (dry grass, leaves or fire starters)

✔️ Small sticks (kindling)

✔️ Larger pieces of firewood

✔️ Matches or a lighter (used only by an adult)

✔️ Bucket of water

✔️ Small shovel

🪜 Step by Step Guide

Step 1

Choose a safe fire pit or designated campsite.

Step 2

Clear away dry leaves and grass around the area.

Step 3

Place your tinder in the centre.

Step 4

Build a small teepee using kindling.

Step 5

An adult lights the tinder.

Step 6

Slowly add larger sticks as the fire grows.

Step 7

Keep the fire small and controlled.

Step 8

When finished, pour plenty of water over the fire.

Step 9

Stir the ashes and add more water until everything is completely cold.

⚠️ Safety First

🟢 Only light fires with an adult.

🟢 Never leave a fire unattended.

🟢 Keep water nearby at all times.

🟢 Never light fires during wildfire warnings.

🟢 Keep tents and trees well away from flames.

🟢 Make sure every ember is cold before leaving.

🌟 Amazing Fact

Lightning causes thousands of natural wildfires around the world every year, but people have also been safely using controlled fires for cooking and warmth for over one million years.
