📖 What is a Compass?

A compass is a small tool that helps you find directions. It has a magnetic needle that always points towards North, making it easier to work out which way you are travelling.

People have used compasses for hundreds of years to explore new places, cross oceans, hike through forests and find their way home. Even today, hikers, campers, sailors, pilots and emergency rescue teams still carry compasses because they don't need batteries or an internet connection to work.

🌍 Where Would You Use It?

You might use a compass when:

🏕️ Camping

🥾 Hiking

🌲 Exploring forests

🧭 Orienteering

⛰️ Mountain walking

🚣 Travelling by canoe or boat

🚨 During emergencies if technology stops working

🤔 Why is it Important?

Imagine your phone battery runs out or you lose your GPS signal while exploring.

Would you still know which way to go?

Learning how to use a compass gives you a real life skill that could help you stay safe. It also helps you understand maps, directions and the world around you.

If the internet disappeared tomorrow, knowing how to use a compass could still help you find your way with confidence.

⚙️ How Does It Work?

The Earth acts like one giant magnet.

Inside every compass is a tiny magnetic needle that is free to spin. The red end of the needle is attracted towards the Earth's magnetic North Pole, so it always points North.

Once you know where North is, you can easily work out:

🧭 North

➡️ East

⬇️ South

⬅️ West

These are called the four cardinal directions.

🧰 What Equipment Do You Need?

✔️ A compass

✔️ A map (optional for beginners)

✔️ A notebook and pencil

✔️ A safe outdoor space to practise

✔️ An adult if you're exploring somewhere new

🪜 Step by Step Guide

Step 1

Hold the compass flat in the palm of your hand.

Step 2

Wait for the needle to stop moving.

Step 3

Find the red end of the needle. This points North.

Step 4

Turn your whole body until the compass needle lines up with the North marker.

Step 5

Now you know where North is, you can find East, South and West.

Step 6

Practise turning to face each direction.

Step 7

Once you're confident, try using your compass with a simple map.

⚠️ Safety First

🟢 Never explore alone.

🟢 Always tell an adult where you're going.

🟢 Stay on marked paths.

🟢 Take water if you're walking any distance.

🟢 Practise in your garden or local park before trying longer walks.

🌟 Amazing Fact

Some amazing animals can naturally sense the Earth's magnetic field.

Birds, sea turtles, salmon and even honeybees use their own built in "compass" to help them travel across huge distances without getting lost!

🧠 Explorer Challenge

Ask an adult to hide four objects around your garden or local park.

Use your compass to walk:

🧭 10 steps North

➡️ 15 steps East

⬇️ 8 steps South

⬅️ 12 steps West

Did you end up where you expected?
