📖 What is Magnetic North?

Magnetic North is the direction a compass needle points. It isn't exactly the same as the North Pole you see on a globe.

That's because the Earth acts like one giant magnet. Deep inside our planet, moving molten metal creates a huge magnetic field. Your compass follows this invisible magnetic field.

🌍 Where Would You Use It?

You might use Magnetic North when:

🧭 Using a compass

🥾 Hiking

🏕️ Camping

🗺️ Reading maps

⛰️ Mountain walking

🚨 Learning survival skills

🤔 Why is it Important?

Understanding Magnetic North helps you use a compass correctly.

Many people think a compass points to the very top of the Earth, but it actually points towards Magnetic North, which slowly moves over time.

Knowing the difference helps explorers, hikers, sailors and pilots travel more accurately.

If the internet disappeared tomorrow, a simple compass and an understanding of Magnetic North could still help you find your way.

⚙️ How Does It Work?

The Earth has an invisible magnetic field that stretches all around the planet.

Inside every compass is a tiny magnetic needle.

Because opposite magnetic poles attract each other, the needle automatically turns until it lines up with Earth's magnetic field.

That's why the red end of the compass needle always points towards Magnetic North.

Scientists have discovered that Magnetic North slowly moves every year because the molten iron inside the Earth is constantly flowing.

🧰 What Equipment Do You Need?

✔️ Compass

✔️ World globe (optional)

✔️ Magnet (optional)

✔️ Paper and pencil

✔️ Map

🪜 Step by Step Guide

Step 1

Place your compass on a flat surface.

Step 2

Watch the needle move.

Step 3

Wait until it stops.

Step 4

Notice that the red end points towards Magnetic North.

Step 5

Turn yourself until the compass needle lines up with the North symbol.

Step 6

Use your map to practise finding directions.

⚠️ Safety First

🟢 Keep your compass away from magnets.

🟢 Large metal objects can affect a compass.

🟢 Never rely on a compass alone in unfamiliar places.

🟢 Always explore with an adult.

🌟 Amazing Fact

Did you know that Magnetic North moves by tens of kilometres every year? Scientists regularly update maps because it doesn't stay in exactly the same place!

🧠 Explorer Challenge

Try placing your compass:

🧲 Near a fridge magnet

📱 Near a mobile phone

🥄 Near a metal spoon

Does the needle behave differently?

(Remember to remove the object afterwards so the compass can point North again.)
